The unincorporated community of Zoar is situated in the eastern region of Sussex County within the state of Delaware. The community is in the Eastern Standard Timezone. It falls under two ZIP codes, 19966 and 19947. The main roadways that travel through the neighborhood are Zoar Road, Gravel Hill Road, Deep Branch Road, and Lawson Road.
History
The Dutch settled in the general area in 1631, but the county was officially organized under English rule in 1683. Before the European settlers took over, the Lenape and Nanticoke Native American tribes dwelled on the land. The county was one of the initial areas to be developed in the state.
Neighborhood
Located on Gravel Hill Road is the 18th century Zoar Methodist Church. The church was established under the ministry of the United States Methodist founders, Bishops Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury. Bishop Coke was originally from Wales, while Bishop Asbury was from Hamstead Bridge, Staffordshire, England. The two joined together as the co-superintendents that began the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States in 1784. Bishop Asbury led the congregation and was opposed by the following:

Before the land was bought from Robert and Sukey Lacey in 1802, the two would hold services in a log structure that became known as the Zoar Methodist Church. After the land was bought, services were held in the grove, and the church was incorporated in 1810. The building that stands now was built following a fire in 1910. Rev. James L. Derrickson, the pastor at the time, did most of the masonry and carpentry. Although annual homecoming services are held in the building in late October, camp meetings stopped in 1919. Weekly services are still held in addition to men and women groups.
