Woodland Beach
The unincorporated community of Woodland Beach is situated on the eastern edge of Kent County in the state of Delaware. The eastern border lies on Delaware Bay and Pierson’s Cove. Duck Creek flows throughout the neighborhood that is home to the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area. The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is to the south of the area, and the Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area is to the north. Some nearby communities include Blackbird, Whitehall Crossroads, Whitehall Landing, and Leipsic.
History
During the 1880s, the community was a resort area and a terminus for daily steamboats coming in from Delaware City, Salem, and the Philadelphia Steamboat Company. A hotel in the area served those traveling on the Kent County and Delaware Bay Railroad. It offered the following amenities to its guests:
- a two-story pavilion with live music
- a bar and a restaurant
- a glass observatory on top
- games such as billiards, shuffleboards, and archery
- a forested park area with tables, chairs, and swings
- facilities for fishing, swimming, and hunting
The area is home to the historic landmark, the Thomas Sutton House, located on Florio Road. The two-story stuccoed brick house was built around 1733 and sits on an acre property. The mid-18th century farmhouse has been well preserved. The initial landowner was Robert Palmatary in 1684, and the house did not come to be owned by Thomas L. Sutton until 1855. Sutton was a farmer within the Smyrna area as well as a merchant. Since his death, the property ownership has changed many times but now serves as an office for the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area.
A hurricane in 1878 generated a massive tidal wave that devastated 35 miles of the coastal edge. The town had amusements rides on the beach and many restaurants and bars that were all wiped out by the storm. Despite being on the list of the state’s best beach towns today, it sees mainly fishermen visiting its coastal area.
