Blackiston
This unincorporated community is located in the western region of Kent County, Delaware. It is situated around the intersection of Delaware Route 6, also known as Millington Road, and Delaware Route 42, also known as Longridge Road. This agricultural area is mainly farmland, such as the Cardinal Woods Christmas tree farm off of Blackiston Road. The neighboring communities are Clayton, Kenton, and Seven Hickories.
History
The town was named after the prominent landowners in the area, the Blackiston Family. Benjamin Blackiston moved into the Kent area after being given a 2,255-acre tract of land. The land was called Deer Park, and in his will, he divided it up between his family in 1758. He gave land to five out of his six children and some land to three of his grandchildren. He sold a portion to people not in his family as well.
During this time, the border between Delaware and Maryland was still in dispute. Since the area was overlapping, it wasn’t until 1765 that the area would finally end up residing in Kent, Delaware. The son died in the 1870s and left his land to his children. By 1859, Benjamin III, the great-great-grandson, had expended his original 200-acres, adding an additional 700 acres. This area was a family-run farm until 1924.
Neighborhood
The area was the former home to the Blackiston Methodist Church that was established in 1778. The church structure once stood at the corner of Millington Road and Blackiston Church Road. The Blackiston family provided the land in 1781, and a large frame building was constructed. The original church was known during the time as the largest Methodist church on the Delmarva Peninsula. This peninsula takes from the three states and covers an area of 170 miles. The church was moved in 1847, and a new one was built in its place. However, in 1980 a storm caused severe damage to the structure, and it had to be dismantled. The historical marker was added to the location in 2002 to commemorate the site. Today the Down Chapel Church, located on Sudlersville Road, serves as the Methodist church in the community.
While the area is mainly covered in farms, it does contain Bucks Taxidermy. Located on Millington Road, the business has been around since 1986 and is owned by Leroy Meekins, otherwise known as Buck. Some of the animals that he specializes in include:
