Wood Branch
Wood Branch is an unincorporated community a part of Sussex County southeast of Georgetown. The community is about 92 miles from Washington DC, the country’s capital. Wood Branch has a variety of attractions and historical monuments, properties, and landmarks to explore, but we recommend venturing out to nearby communities in Sussex County to discover more.
Sussex County
The county is located in the southern portion of Delaware and has an estimated population of 197,145 based on the 2010 United States census. The Dutch established the first European settlement in Delaware in 1631 near Lewes’ present-day town on the Atlantic Coast. However, under English colonial control, Sussex County was not established until 1683.
History
The first settlers of Sussex County are said to have arrived between 10,000 to 14,000 years ago, according to archaeologists. There were a variety of indigenous cultural groups that resided in the area, closer to the river and coast for hunting and fishing.
There is no consensus about who was the first European group to arrive in Sussex County. Historians agree that Spanish or Portuguese colonists were the first Europeans to see the Delaware River and the lands of modern-day Sussex County during the early years of colonization, which lasted from 1593 to 1630.
Economic Strengths
Agriculture plays an important role in Sussex County’s economy. Sussex County, in particular, produces more poultry than any other county in the United States. Tourism is also important to the economy, particularly in eastern Sussex County. The Delaware Beaches raise $6.9 billion in annual sales and $711 million in tax revenue, according to SeaGrant Delaware.
Attractions & Entertainment
The County is home to an assortment of fairs, festivals, and special events that are held all year round. Some of the most popular events are:
- The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral
- Apple Scapple Festival
- Return Day Parade
