Shortly
The unincorporated community of Shortly is situated just south of Georgetown in Sussex County, Delaware. The community sits at the intersection of Shortly Road and Homestead Road, also known as Road 442. Long Drain Ditch and Sheep Pen Ditch flow through the small neighborhood. Hardscrabble Road, or Delaware Route 20, runs across the southern edge of the community.
History
Initially, the area was inhabited by the Lenape and Nanticoke tribes of Native Americans. Their camps were set up along the waterways where they would catch the following:
- fish
- oysters
- other shellfish
- shells for beads
They would hunt during the winter months for deer, and other small game as large game was not found within the area.
The settlers that followed the Native American Indians were predominantly of Dutch origin. They came into the area around 1631. The English followed under the control of William Penn. Land disputes delayed development, but the Mason-Dixon Line was established, setting up an agreement with both Penn and Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore. This line also switched the inconvenient Lewes being the county seat to Georgetown.
Neighborhood
The community is home to the Homestead Manufactured Home Community. The neighborhood consists of 79 lots with manufactured homes that vary in design and architect. There is also a large mobile home community off of Paradise Street and Rodney Street. The average home value is $17,705, and the average lot size is 308.5k sq feet. Most of the houses were constructed around 1984, and the property tax runs $583 per year.
The Mt Olivet Brethren Church is located on Shortly Road, just south of the Long Drain Ditch.
AS many as 35.5% of the adults in the community have at least a high school diploma, and 8.1% have their bachelor’s degree. Some of the schools the townspeople attend include:
