Pennyhill
The unincorporated community is located just northeast of Wilmington in New Castle County in the state of Delaware. The neighboring communities include Brandywine Hills, Bellefonte, Pennyhill Terrace, and Gristmill Woods. Washington Street Extension travels along the western section of the neighborhood while Philadelphia Pike, or Route 13, runs along the eastern section.
Historical Landmark
Just off of Philadelphia Pike is the historical Weldin House. The house was built around 1790 and construction over the years has allowed it to expand. It began with just two rooms as a block home. The first addition took place in 1854 to the first floor and was quickly followed by the addition of a second story. Unfortunately, the house was not properly maintained and was on the brink of being demolished to build a gas station on the lot. With the help of the community, the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs purchased the historical landmark and will be restoring it to be used as the community’s shared meeting place. Some of the work being planned includes:
- reconstructing a porch
- restoring wood windows and doors
- masonry repairs and reporting
- cleaning exterior stone
- replacing the large first-floor front window
- replacing wood shingle siding on the second story
Neighborhood
Rockwood Park lies on the northwest border of the neighborhood. This park was established by a Quaker merchant banker, Joseph Shipley, from 1851 to 1854. Designed after an English-style country estate, the park has many Gothic Revival architectural elements and landscaping qualities. The mansion that sits on the property was a retirement home for Shipley, as he spent most of his life in England. The estate became the property of the county in 1973. The 72 acres is now open to the residents and guests who can visit the attractions on the property, including:
- Mansion & Conservatory
