History
Located in Wilmington, Delaware, Alapocas Run State Park runs along the Brandywine Creek. The park, first named Alapocas Woods, was originally created as a 123 acres city park by two businessmen, Alfred I. du Pont and William Poole Bancroft.
Bancroft was also a philanthropist and environmentalist who played a vital role in establishing the park’s landscaping, preservation, and the development of nearby city parks. Over the years, the park expanded to 145 acres, most of which consisted of dense forest.
The park also held a historic granite quarry that was operated from 1870 to 1938. Stone from the quarry was used to build local landmarks, such as the walls of Brandywine Park, the tower of Rockford Park, and the National Refuge Harbor.
Blue Ball Barn
In the park, you’ll discover the remarkable Blue Ball Barn; with its impressive ecologically designed layout, it currently maintains the Delaware Fold Art Collection for guests to explore. Along with housing the Art Collection, Blue Ball Barn also has multipurpose benefits.
Renovations have built a multifunctional conference, special event, and gallery area with meeting spaces, a large dining room, and a secluded courtyard for parties, weddings, and seminars.
Can-Do Playground
Created by the Wilmington-area Rotary Clubs, this 27,000 square foot playground offers limitless playtime for all children regardless of their physical, mental, or sensory abilities. The park also provides a variety of games and activities such as soccer, hockey and football fields, lacrosse, rock climbing, and rappelling.
