Established in 1963 with over 10,000 square feet of refuge, Prime Hook Refuge remains a safe-haven for a diverse amount of wildlife in Delaware. The Refuge was created by the Migratory Bird Conservation Act “for use as an inviolate sanctuary, or for any other management purpose, for migratory birds.”
It is located west of Delaware Bay, about 20 miles away from Dover, Delaware, and serves as a critical layover for migratory birds that travel up and down the Atlantic Flyway. The refuge provides a safe breeding ground and rest area for an extensive list of threatened and endangered species of birds both federally and state-wide.
Habitat
Prime Hook habitat consists of a salt and freshwater marsh, several ponds, wooded swamplands, grasslands, and forests. The habitat is home to over 308 species of birds, 51 species of fish, 45 different reptiles and amphibians, 37 mammals, and a plethora of insects.
Wildlife By Season
Depending on when you choose to visit, you’ll have the opportunity to see breathtaking views and all the natural resources that belong to the wildlife.
In the winter months, expect to see:

- Pintail Ducks

In Spring, you’ll see:
- Spring Waterfowl
- Snow Geese
- Ospreys
- Woodchucks
- Woodcock
- Alders
- Deer Ticks

- Largemouth Bass
- Tree Swallow
- Hummingbirds
In Summer, you’ll be surprised to find:
- Songbirds
- Baby eagles
- Water Lilies
- Black Necked Stilts
- Ospreys
- Shorebirds
- Horseshoe Crabs
- Green and Blue-Winged Teals
In the Fall, expect to see a variety of species already mentioned, along with:
- Canada Geese
- Black Ducks
- Tickseed Sunflower
- Whitetail Deer Bucks
