Milford
The city of Milford is situated on the county line of both Kent and Sussex Counties within the state of Delaware. The Mispillion River flows through the neighborhood. The city takes up 6,316.8 acres, of which 57.6 acres is water. Some of the towns that share a border are Freeman Corner, Lincoln, Cedar Creek, Woods Haven, Wissemen Acres, and Frederica. The main roads that travel throughout the town are Dupont Boulevard, Milford Bypass, Bay Road, Front Street, Rehoboth Boulevard, and Walnut Street.
History
The section of town the falls in the boundaries of Kent County was settled first. Henry Bowan moved to the Saw Mill Range area in 1680. He was followed by Reverend Sydenham Thorne over a century later. Thorne built a dam on the Mispillion River that powered his sawmill and gristmill. The streets were soon laid out by Joseph Oliver, who purchased a plantation in the neighborhood. Businesses and homes began to line Front Street just as the city was incorporated in 1807.
The river brought many shipbuilding companies during the late 1700s. As many as six shipyards operated in the downtown area by 1917. However, as the final white oaks were cut down, the shipyards closed. The area served as mainly a commercial center for the larger agricultural communities in southern Delaware.
Neighborhood
The Historic District of the neighborhood is home to the Parson Thorne Mansion, as well as many of the following:
- upmarket boutiques
- art galleries
- restaurants
- a community theatre
The town celebrates the importance of the river with special annual events, such as the Riverwalk Freedom Festival and the Bug & Bud Festival. Biking and walking paths run along the river for the community to enjoy.
The Milford Museum is located on Walnut Street in the old Post Office building. It was established in 1983 and is owned by the State’s Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs. Some of the museum’s top exhibits include:

Demographics
According to the 2010 count, the neighborhood had 9,559 residents, and there were 4,126 households. The racial makeup of the community was the following:
- 55.4% white
- 18.2% Hispanic or Latino
- 21.3% African American
- 1.7% Asian
- 3.1% two or more races
- 0.2% other races
English is the first language for 92.5% of the residents, and 5.9% speak Spanish. As many as 86.6% were born in the United States, the rest were born in countries outside the United States. Some common ancestries found within the townspeople include:
- 14.3% Irish
- 11.8% English
- 9.9% German
- 4.8% Italian
- 3.3% Puerto Rican
The income per household averages $47,600. Some of the occupations held by the working residents include:
- 11.5% sales
- 10.8% construction
- 10.6% administration
- 5.9% production
