Lincoln
The small unincorporated community of Lincoln is situated in the northern region of Sussex County, Delaware. It falls in the ZIP code of 19960 and the area code 302 and is a census-designated place or CDP. The neighboring communities include Greentop, Pondside Acres, Anderson Crossroads, Federalsburg, and Milford. The main thoroughfares in the community are Dupont Boulevard, Greentop Road, North Old State Road, Clendaniel Pond Road, and Johnson Road.
History
The area, formerly known as Lincoln City, was founded by Colonel Abel Stokes Small in 1865. Colonel Small, from New York, was planning the mass development of the southern region of Delaware in response to the arrival of the Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia Railroad. The local newspaper began publication in October of 1865 was mentioned in The New York Times in 1866. The completion of the railroad station to the city was done by 1888. Colonel Small constructed a lumber and planing mill, but a fire in 1889 destroyed them.
In 1891, the community became the home of a horse racing race track. A devastating fire took out a granary, a store, and an ice house in 1897 on Christmas morning.
Neighborhood
The neighboring city of Milford has seen a growth spurt towards the community. This growth has caused some concern and a push to incorporate the community. Currently, the community has limited businesses in the area, including the Little Lincoln Store on the corner of Johnson Road and Road 38B. The Post Office is just next door, but most of the retail is heading north toward Milford.
The community offers several options for the religious community to worship, including:
- Church Tabernacle – located on Johnson Road
- Lincoln United Methodist – located on Road 38C
- Christian Tabernacle – located on Johnson Road
- Pentecostal Church Of God – located on Greentop Road
The area falls into the Milford School District, and students travel to attend the following schools:
- Milford High School
- Milford Central Academy
- Banneker (Benjamin) Elementary School
- Mispillion Elementary School
- Ross (Lulu M.) Elementary School
- Evelyn I. Morris Early Childhood Center
Demographics
The neighborhood’s population was 6,578, making it the 13th largest community in the state. The area has a large Hispanic population, making up 16.32%. The following are some common ancestries the resident identify with:
