History
Despite the county being home to the first settlement in Delaware by the Dutch around 1631, the area’s development was slow under English rule. The area that would later become Georgetown, named after State Senate George Mitchell, initially covered a 76-acre area. The town still has a Georgetown address, despite being 5.8 miles from the town’s center.
Located just off of Redden Road is the oldest Methodist church in the Georgetown Hundred. Mc Colley’s Chapel United Methodist Church was initially built by Trustan P. McColley on land that was donated by James Rudden in 1857. Unfortunately, during the 1890s, the first church building was destroyed by fire damage. The present-day church structure was built in 1898 and is still holding services. It is under the United Methodist Church directed by the Peninsula-Delaware Conference. The adjoining property is the cemetery that contains burial sites from as far back as 1860. A few of the plots have iron railings surrounding them while some of the older tombstones are made of marble. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
