Dover History
Not only is Dover the capital and largest city in Delaware, but it also holds the county seat of Kent County. The city was named after Dover, Kent in England, by William Penn and was founded as a judicial town for Kent County in 1683. The city was later laid out by a special commission of the Delaware General Assembly in 1717. Because of its central position and relative protection from British raiders on the Delaware River, the state capital of Delaware was relocated here from New Castle in 1777.
Caesar Rodney, the famous wartime chief of Delaware during the American Revolution, was born in Dover. His grave is located outside of Dover, although the exact site is uncertain. In the cemetery of Christ Episcopal Church near The Green in Dover, a war memorial has been placed in his name.
Parks & Recreation
The City of Dover Parks & Recreation Department manages three major parks and 27 smaller parks in the city. The largest is Silver Lake Park, with 182-acres of space filled with tons of activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, a playground, and pavilions. Another park well-liked by locals is Schutte Park, an athletic facility that offers visitors 10 playing fields, four softball fields, a cross-country course, walking paths, and other recreational activities.
