The neighborhood of Hilltop is located in the northwestern section of Wilmington in New Castle, Delaware. The community includes the neighborhood of Little Italy. History
The neighborhood is home to the Tilton Mansion, located on North Broom Street. The large estate was home to Dr. James Tilton. Tilton was known for his accompaniment to General George Washington as he crossed the Delaware River as the first U.S. Army Surgeon General. The Wilmington Whist Club and University Club Of Wilmington merged in 1958, but each club dates back farther. A group of Wilmington businessmen began playing a card game called Whist. They officially formed a club in 1891 that excluded women along with drinking and gambling. The University Club of Wilmington was established by some male college graduates in 1924. The two groups were always cordial and eventually combined efforts to provide a wholesome club for their members. They moved into the Tilton Mansion in 1958.
The mansion serves as a venue offering its guests, both members and nonmembers, a beautiful backdrop for many types of private parties.
Neighborhood
The community is filled with row homes that were built around 1900. In the northern section is the neighborhood Little Italy, named for its high population of Italian-American community. The St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, located on West 9th Street and North DuPont Street, was built in 1924 and designed with a Romanesque Revival architectural style. The church caters to the Italian heritage by hosting an annual Italian Festival. It is the second-largest in the United States and honors the Feast of Saint Anthony. The event lasts a week and includes the following:
