The Delaware Art Museum, which houses a collection of more than 12,000 items, is an art museum located on Kentmere Parkway in Wilmington, Delaware. In honor of the artist Howard Pyle, the museum was founded in 1912 as the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts.
The exhibition reflects on 19th to 21st-century American art and illustration, and the mid-19th century English Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood movement.
History
Originally named Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts in 1912, the museum’s first collection was of 100 paintings, drawings, and prints that were purchased by the widow of Howard Pyle. His death was unexpected; thus, he left behind many students, family, and friends who wished to honor his memory through the museum’s founding.
The Pyle Collection continued to grow as more patrons donating his pieces of work to the museum. Willard S. Morse gave over 100 Pyle pen and ink drawings from 1915 to 1919, and Samuel Bancroft donated a collection of Pre-Raphaelite works along with 11 acres of land for the expansion of the museum.
Since the 1970s, the museum continues to add work created by modern artists such as:
- Robert Motherwell
- Jim Dine
- Jacob Lawrence
- Louise Nevelson
- George Segal
