The Invention Of The Modern Car
Transportation has come a long way in a very short period of time, historically speaking. In the 1700s, Thomas Newcomen created a steam engine that was used to pump water. Others improved upon this design and built a high pressured engine that was strong enough to power a locomotive.
Meanwhile, Karl Benz designed, built, and patented a two-stroke engine that was powered with gasoline in 1879. In 1885, Benz built his first “Motorwagen,” a three-wheeled vehicle that he got a patent for in 1886. By the early 1890s, Benz had sold around 25 models of his Motorwagen, both three and four-wheeled models.
Two American men, the Duryea brothers, built their version of a vehicle that was gasoline-powered, naming it the Duryea Motorwagon.
Each of these inventors was just part of what would soon become a fast-growing industry. The demand for a personal vehicle grew and soon, manufacturers began to mass produce the parts needed to build cars.
This also meant that mechanics could purchase car parts, allowing them to open independent auto body shops, shops that offered repair services to those who were involved in the first car accidents.
James Lambert: The Driver Who Had The First Car Crash
James William Lambert built his own car, a single-piston engine powered with gasoline. What he didn’t realize is that having only three wheels, two in the back and one in the front, made the vehicle fairly unstable. When he took the vehicle for a drive with a friend, it crashed when a tire hit a tree root. Later, Lambert improved his design by adding a fourth wheel, but that vehicle caught fire when he tried to drive it and was destroyed.
Thankfully, no one was injured in either accident.
Today, thousands of auto body shops provided services to car owners who need repairs.
