Museum History
Established in 1993, one of the finest collections of American fine and decorative arts is located at the Sewell C. Biggs Museum of American Art Museum. Upon opening, the museum quickly became one of the most significant museums in all of Delaware. Inside, you’ll find the best exhibitions of American representational art with pieces of furniture, silver, paintings, and sculptures.
The facility holds 25 fascinating galleries all in chronological order to display the evolution of Mid-Atlantic fashion and decorative arts through the 1700s. The permanent collection at the museum specially features the Delmarva Peninsula American painting collections along with pieces from the Peale family, Gilbert Stuart, Childe Hassam, and Albert Bierstadt.
Founder Sewell C. Biggs passed away in 2003 and left his legacy in the collection at the museum. It continues to expand and refine its collection as it displays his passion for collecting symbols of regional, artful and architectural work.

The Biggs offers a variety of school and family programs that help foster an appreciation of the arts for emerging artists and art aficionados. They provide a change from self-guided tours to specific classes on all sorts of American art.
